Candid photos in the good old days

March 19, 2011

Film heads can only envy the young folks today who can take digital photos in dark places with no problems (really?) but back in the day “available light” photography was a challenge.  We found this snapshot while researching the topic of snapshot collecting.  We have no idea who took it.  Where. or When.

We may write a column on it just for a change of pace topic.

They don’t make ’em like that, these days

Peerless Auto.  This old car in an old snapshot was something we happened upon while working on our snapshot project.

Remember rumble seats?

January 16, 2011

We love the car with a rumble seat in the line of cars shown in this old snapshot.

Best working man’s car ever!

January 15, 2011

As part of our new snapshot collecting fact finding process, we acquired one that includes this portion that shows a 36 Ford Sedan parked next to a 40 Ford convertable.

To our way of thinking, the 1940 Ford Convertible was the best working man’s priced production car ever made.

Other cars (such as a Cobra) make for a more exotic collector’s prize, but for a mass produced affordable car, we have always put the 40 Fords Deluxe convetable and Coupe, at the top of the list.

Now, back to reality . . .

History club trip on October 9, 1936

January 15, 2011

As part of our new snapshot project, we acquired this 8X10 print of the Waukegan Township High School History Club’s historic trip on October 9, 1936.  There is no indication if the club went somewhere on the DC-3 or if their history trip was just to an airport to see it.

Isn’t it doubtful that that many folks could fit into a DC-3?

We are not sure where we are going with our snapshot collecting project but, so far, it has been fun finding items such as this.

If anyone knows about this WTHS History Club trip please add your information in the comments section.  Thanks!

Puddle-spotting

We don’t know where this photo was taken but writing on the print indicates it was taken on Nov. 26, 1926.

If you know where this is please share that info in the comments section.

Thanks!

Jack Scribner’s Union Oil gas station

January 15, 2011

As part of our new snapshot project, we found this photo of Jack Schribner’s Union Oil gas station.  We don’t know where it is or was but the car makes us guess that this is a print from a snapshot taken in the forties or fifties.

Anyone with better information is invited to share it via a post in the comments section.

(Update on Sunday Jan. 16, 2011) The read is correct.  Using a powerful negative loupe we gave the print another look.  This is Jack Scribner’s Union Oil Station.

On the back of this old snapshot, it says “Capital United States Washington.”  At least that’s what I was told it says.
